Just Create (a lesson from my children to marketers)

If you are a marketer, specifically a content marketer, and are having trouble getting started; or if you are stuck, then this short post is for you. (maybe it's for me too).  😉

Innocent Creativity

I am in awe of my kids. They don’t spend too much time planning. They don’t worry about the possibility of making a mistake. They just create. They evaluate… then refine their process and create again… and again… and again…

(and they don’t worry about the overuse of ellipese……… or beginning a sentence with the word ‘and.’ Nor do they worry about the lack of capitalization of the first word of a sentence. But I digress. LOL).

My 15 year old son has been shooting videos and creating art and trying new things with a fearlessness that is truly inspiring. He has been doing so for about 7 years now.

At 8 years old, my daughter creates videos that can be shaky and sometimes out of focus but are jammed solid with valuable content that is perfect for her cute little niche.

They don’t overthink. They just do.

Sure, they think about what they want to talk about before the press the record button. But they keep it simple and more importantly, they don’t worry about what other people are going to think. They just create.

Motivations

I think an important factor to their willingness to share their talents and ideas is their lack of ulterior motive.

Neither of them are trying to sell anything. Both are creating content for the love of their particular interest. They just want to share what they know with other people with the same interests.

They are giving pure value without pretense. There is no desperation to make a dollar behind anything they do.

The Takeaway

I think there is a valuable lesson to be learned from them here. We as content creators need to continue to focus on helping other people for the love of helping other people. I believe that when we do that with sincerity, it will show in what we create.

When we focus on other people’s needs, we will find ourselves getting everything we need as well.

Create with fearlessness. Create often. The process will become easier and faster with time. You can always go back and update your work and make it prettier later on.

Just create.
