“Ok, I'm officially an affiliate marketer…now what???”
As an affiliate marketer it can sometimes be difficult to choose which products and services to promote. There are thousands of products and programs to promote. So the question becomes, which ones are best?
In this short article, I'm going to give you five things to look for before choosing a product or an opportunity to promote as an affiliate.
These five considerations should help give you some clarity in choosing what to promote.
1. Product Value
I'm not talking about the price of the product here, I'm talking about how much value does product or service will bring to your audience or clients. You have to ask yourself a couple of questions:
- Is this product or service something that will help my audience (clients/customers)?
You have worked hard to gain the trust of your audience. If you offer a product to them, they will expect it to help solve their problems or get what they need from using it. If it does not, trust could be damaged and a client could be lost.
- “Is the amount of value this product will bring to my clients worth the price?”
That question should be yes, regardless of the dollar amount being charged. It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about a $7 product or a $700 product; people want to know that they are getting the most bang for the buck before they buy. This is especially true as the price of the product increases.
It stands to reason that there needs to be sufficient profit margins to cover the cost it takes to sell that product. Having higher margins means you don’t have to sell hundreds or even thousands of products each and every month.
Ideally, the company will have a value ladder of products that offer a wide variety of pricing options. This will allow you to make offers to all of your audience regardless of their current financial situation.
As you probably already know, all Affiliate programs have links that are unique to you and only you. When someone clicks through one of those links and makes a purchase it is tracked to you.
When choosing a product or program to promote, you will want to know how long those links are connected to you.
- Do you earn a commission on the initial sale only?
- Do you earn on each purchase that referral makes thereafter?(ie: upsells, subscription services, etc.)
Obviously, earning commissions for every purchase your referral makes would be preferred. Otherwise, you will be faced with the task of selling higher numbers of single-sale products if you only get paid for the front-end sales.
A company that has links tracked to you for the longevity your referral is a customer is the way to go.
4. Marketing Material
Does the affiliate program provide solid marketing materials for you to use? Most programs do to some degree or another.
Some things to look for in a program’s marketing material:
- High converting sales videos
- Pre-built sales funnels
- Follow up email sequences
- Sales staff to make follow-up calls
- Product support staff
Keep in mind that anything not on the above list is something that you will have to do yourself. As an affiliate marketer, having all of those things done for you helps you become more efficient. It will allow you to concentrate on driving traffic to your offer(s).
Plain and simple, does the company offering the affiliate program have a good reputation?
- Do they stand behind their products?
- Do they treat their people right?
- Do they support you with coaching?
- Do they pay what they say they are going to pay? And do they pay on time?
Just as in any area of life, integrity online is everything!
There are plenty of unscrupulous companies out there. The last thing you want to do is promote a shady product or service to your clients or customers. Not only will you possibly lose that customer, it may prevent you from getting customers in the future as the word gets out. And eventually it will get out.
So please choose a reputable company whose products you will promote.
In The End
Choosing products and services to promote and the companies that provide them can be overwhelming. This list is not the “end-all” of things to consider when choosing a company to partner with. However, if the company you choose to partner with can provide you with all the items on this list, your odds of being successful will greatly increase!

Until next time… always be helping others.
There are affiliate links in this blog post. If you decide to make a purchase after clicking through one of these links, I earn a small commission for that. It does not change the price for you whatsoever. Prices do not change regardless of where you buy.
Any income claims, or claims of success are not necessarily true for everyone. Just like any other career or business venture, hard work and persistence is required. Many people succeed…and many fail as well. It is up to YOU to determine your fate.
